‘Tis the season for holly jolly fun. But there’s nothing like an uninvited guest to kill a good time. In this case, we’re talking about common home pests (and we’re not talking about your great aunt Martha).
Bugs are trying to survive by finding warm places to pass the winter. If they’ve chosen your home, though, rest assured you’re not permanently stuck with squatters. Here are five common home pests and how to get rid of them for good.
House spiders are more common in winter. This is also considered “spider mating season,” which is one reason why you might notice more spider activity.
There are several natural ways you can get rid of spiders in your home. One of the best winter methods is to use peppermint essential oil. It’s festive smelling, plus spiders hate it. Mix a few drops with oil and spray in places where you’ve seen spider activity, as well as doorways and windows.
Ants are hard to control because they follow trails left behind by other ants. They love places rich in sugar and crumbs, both of which abound in homes during the delicious holiday season.
If you want to get rid of ants, you need to get rid of their trails. A water and vinegar solution can disturb their marching patterns and confuse them out of your home.
Cockroaches love a warm home, and they need very little to survive. However, this is one pest you’ll want to get rid of quickly, as they’re known to carry diseases and bacteria.
Cockroaches won’t thrive in a clean, clutter-free home. Give them fewer places to hide. Give your home a deep cleaning. And properly store all food so its scent doesn’t attract unwanted guests.
House flies and fruit flies are attracted to food and moisture and will make your food instantly unappetizing. Flies may have a short life span, but they reproduce quickly. You will want to get rid of a single fly as soon as possible before one fly turns into many.
A flyswatter is the fastest and most direct method. You should also properly store your food, clean your drains, and make fly traps.
Small, furry rodents belong in cages or in fields and woods, not your home. They can spread diseases and they’re highly destructive.
Most rodents are attracted to food and warmth. Make sure you put up all food and seal holes throughout your home (including the attic) where rodents can enter.
Preventing these common pests that invade homes is your best defense. With good prevention, you can enjoy a pest-free home and not give unwanted visitors a second thought.
